Method for integration of immigrants and refugees
This project has resulted in the development of a method for the integration, in European countries, of immigrants and refugees originating from outside the European Union. This method is aimed at both individuals and communities, because integration can only be successful when it is a two-way process. The immigrants have to adapt to the new society, but society also has to adapt. The method comprises various elements which can be used to compose tailor-made programmes to suit different contexts and different people.

The first key word is empowerment. Integration should be based on the qualities immigrants bring with them. Any integration process should help immigrants to effectively build an existence in their new societies by making optimum use of these qualities. In this way, society also benefits. Empowerment also implies that influence and power must be democratically divided among all citizens, including immigrants.

The second key word is networking. Immigrants lose most of their networks when they leave their countries of origin. They need to make new contacts in their new countries in order to follow education, find work, and to become involved in leisure-time activities. They can function more effectively if their networks include people from other population groups. If groups of people have little contact with each other, tensions can arise because they regard each other as strangers. Networking is a way to focus on similarities instead of differences, and to avoid the isolation of minority groups.

The method is not only suitable to be used by social workers and volunteers in specific integration programmes, but also in general social work with immigrants or communities.

Teachers’ Manual containing learning programmes for social work students
The method description can be used as a handbook for social work students. An accompanying Teachers’ Manual has been developed which offers a variety of instructional methods.

Training Course for social workers and volunteers
A Trainers’ Manual has been developed for social workers and volunteers who wish to use the method. This offers basic training in intercultural communication and specific training relating to the method described in the book.
